Adult Sunday School Classes:
Christianity & Liberalism taught by Elder Kevin Nichols
J. Gresham Machen is not a household name these days. But in the 1920's and 30's he was regularly featured in the New York Times as a controversial figure in the Presbyterian church. Machen was a professor at Princeton Seminary and was concerned with the impact that German Biblical scholarship was having on the teaching of Theology. The teaching of the day mostly did away with the authority of Scripture, any mention of the miraculous and the exclusive nature of the Christian faith. This "modernism" movement led many American churches to downplay these elements in their ministries.
In 1923, Machen wrote Christianity and Liberalism as an effort to show that the effects of Modernism was not to weaken Biblical Christianity but to create another religion. Liberalism completely detached itself from the basic, historic tenents of the faith.
On the 100th anniversary of its publication we will study this modern theological classic. Far from being a anachronistic text set in the dusty past, Christianity and Liberalism is essential reading for the Christian today. It has been said that this book "could have been written last Thursday" because the effects of the Liberalism project have been fully realized in our day. "Many are calling for a reevaluation of biblical views on sexual attraction, the sanctity of life, ethnic diversity, or even what it means to be a man or a woman. Although the topics have changed, the motivation for liberalism today isn’t all that different from that scathing critique of the church Machen confronted 100 years ago."(from christianityandliberalism.com) In a post-Christian age it is essential for the believers "to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to saints" (Jude 3b).
The Westminster Larger Catechism taught by Elder Michel vs der Hoek
The Westminster Larger Catechism is—together with the Westminster Confession of Faith and the Shorter Catechism—one of the great faith documents of the Reformation. The Westminster Standards were produced during a dramatic period of history, the English Civil Wars. The Westminster Divines wanted to reform the English church. Their model was the Church of Scotland, which had stripped away most of the so-called ‘High Church’ liturgy that had been retained in England.
Ironically, though the English Puritans prevailed in the English Civil Wars, the Westminster Standards were never implemented in England because Oliver Cromwell was wary of the Presbyterians in Parliament. However, the Church of Scotland adopted them eagerly. It was the Scots immigrants to the United States who brought the Confession and the two catechisms to America.
In this coming quarter, we will be studying the last section of the Westminster Larger Catechism, which deals with prayer.

This quarter covers the book of Genesis, including: Creation, Adam and Eve, Noah, Abraham and Sarah, Isaac and Rebekah, Esau and Jacob, and Joseph. The lessons show how all of these people were called to be a part of God’s plan of salvation. The lessons from Genesis also show how God blesses the families and is faithful to us not because of anything we do, but because He chooses us to be in his family.
