Duties, responsibilities, work emphases:

Ministry to State (MTS) exists as a means to develop ministry to government officials and their staffs with these fundamental objectives:

1. Engage those in government communities around the world with the transforming truths of the gospel through healthy relationships.
2. Provide encouragement and support in the development of a Biblical worldview for those in government who make a profession of faith.
3. Strive to be instrumental in establishing and maintaining a Biblical conscience throughout the government community who both create and implement policy.
4. Provide a healthy means to connect the church in a non-partisan manner with those in government.
5. Promote and facilitate specificity and intelligent prayer by the body of Christ for those serving in government.

Thomas serves as the Associate Director for State Capitols.  His responsibilities are the following:

  1. Visit presbyteries (goal is all PCA presbyteries) informing them of MTS’ mission, answering questions, and updating them on our ministry.
  2. Find Teaching Elders both willing and qualified to be an MTS State Capitol Minister in each of the 50 state capitols, the four US territories, and the 13 provinces and territories of Canada
  3. Interview, follow-up on references, work with MNA to hire new ministers for MTS.
  4. Train and shepherd MTS State Capitol Ministers
  5. Develop policy for MTS
  6. Develop bible study material directed to our magistrate.

Lorelei serves as general editor for newsletters and other publications that we produce.  She is also our photographer as needed.  Lastly, during our presbytery visits she is available to answer questions about the ministry.

MTS has been a challenge during the pandemic.  Our ministers (whom Thomas mentors and supervises) have had to make a lot of adjustments.  The pandemic cannot stop them (and us) from praying and we continue to do that.  Most of the MTS ministers spend a part of their day praying then corresponding (usually via email) to those whom they have prayed.  This has established a number of great on-line ministry opportunities and relationships that will bare much fruit after the pandemic has passed.  Some of the MTS ministers have been able to visit their capitols in person to continue one-on-one ministry.  Some have arranged meetings (such as a coffee, breakfast, lunch) with various politicians to continue their direct ministry to them.  Our volunteer minister in Oklahoma City stated that they have been able to continue their Bible study / lunch throughout the pandemic.

A little bit personal:

2020 Challenges: Earlier this year Thomas was diagnosed with a recurrence of Large B Cell Lymphoma and began chemotherapy treatment March 23, 2020. Since then, he has had a long run of treatments and procedures. One of the results of his treatment has been the wiping out of his childhood and adult immunizations, such that he will have to have all of them all over again. He is more than two months since his bone marrow transplant to reestablish his immunity system. He is gradually feeling and getting better.

Favorite pastime: Thomas and Lorelei love gardening and spending time with our grandchildren.  Thomas is also a gamer and in his off time you might catch him playing a computer game. Lorelei loves to knit, spend time keeping in touch with loved ones on Facebook, and making art.

Favorite food:  Steak and potatoes.  They also love strawberries and fresh veggies from their garden.  Lorelei also loves fresh grilled fish (Thomas says fish is OK as well)

Favorite book / movie:  Too many to list.  Thomas loves audio books and has an Audible account that delivers one book a month to listen to.

Prayer needs:

  1. Strength and a healthy recovery.
  2. Lorelei as his care giver.
  3. Increased support funding will come in to cover three MTS ministers that are not currently fully funded.
  4. Continuing his local MTS ministry for Georgia.
  5. The Lord would call PCA ministers to MTS in each state, province and territory in the USA and Canada (as well and provide the support needed for each).
  6. That God would greatly bless the ministry of MTS State Capitol Ministers and that through them our politicians would be both called to the gospel and that they would desire the “development of a Biblical worldview”.
